HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV)
A person with HIV can develop a lot of health issues due to a weak immune system. It can lead to skin conditions that cause rashes, sores, and lesions when the body’s immune system is weakened by HIV.
Conditions of the skin may be among the earliest signs of HIV and may occur during its primary stage. They may also indicate the progression of the disease, as cancers and infections benefit from immune dysfunction in the later stages of the disease.
Over the course of their infection, about 90% of people with HIV can develop a skin condition. Typically, these skin conditions fall into one of three categories:
– Skin cancer
– Inflammatory dermatitis, or skin rashes
– Infections and infestations, including bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic
